President-Elect: Cynthia Bakker, Speech-Language Pathologist, Regina

I am the mother of two wonderful boys who remind me every day of the power of parents to teach, mentor and support their children. This has been my guiding principle for close to 17 years of my career as a Speech Language Pathologist. I have worked with children in many different capacities for over 25 years and love spending every day helping families teach their children. I have worked in three provinces and in a multitude of settings, both public and private including:  child development centres, schools, Tribal Councils, community outreach positions and private practices.  We moved back to Saskatchewan nine years ago to be closer to family. I currently work for Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region in the Children’s Program as an outreach worker in North Central Regina and at Regina Speech Centre Inc. as a private practitioner. I attended the University of Ottawa and completed my undergraduate in linguistics in psychology and then took some time off to serve with the Royal Canadian Navy. I then re-entered school and completed a Masters Degree in Speech Language Pathology at the University of Alberta. I received the CASLPA Editor’s Award in 2003 for an article in CJSLPA and was recently nominated for the Saskatchewan Literacy Network’s (SLN) Literacy Award of Merit for my work coordinating family literacy programs in North Central Regina. I love to spend time outdoors with my family canoeing and hiking and moonlight as a preschool soccer coach and cross country ski coach. I continue to be an active participant in SLN projects, am a long standing preschool story time teacher in my community, and a library board trustee. My experience across many different settings and provinces has given me a broad view of our professions and will allow me to bring different viewpoints to the table. I am a true neuroscience geek and strongly believe in staying current in our field through research.  I love to be a part of guiding the values of progressiveness and accountability through ongoing work on our continuing education structures and reporting. I truly love our professions and look forward to promoting what we do in the public eye.  I have previously been able to volunteer on committees through both BCASLPA and SASLPA, and now I would like to dedicate some more time to helping guide practice in our province by supporting SASLPA’s work.
